MPs give cross-party support for reform of bus industry

Labour and Lib Dem MPs today launched a House of Commons Early Day Motion which supports giving local authorities the powers to franchise bus services. London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, already has these powers, and has used them to radically improve the quality of London's bus services.

pteg today welcomed the Government's announcement that they plan to consult on reducing the time it would take for PTEs and local authorities to introduce bus quality contract schemes. pteg said the Government's announcement brings the introduction of franchising of bus services outside London a 'step closer,' and that it 'reflects a growing consensus that it's time to get some quality contract schemes underway.'

pteg described the Strategic Rail Authority’s rolling stock strategy released today as, ‘a welcome commitment from the SRA to better manage and coordinate decisions on rolling stock,’ but said, ‘there was still no clear plan for providing the extra trains needed to tackle worsening overcrowding on commuter services in the regions.’

Transport consultants JMP have been commissioned to produce the report which will examine the role of rail in the conurbations in the context of the full range of relevant Government policy objectives.
