Stephen Edwards is Corporate Director of Public Transport at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. He was previously Executive Director of SYPTE since November 2015, where he is responsible for leading the development of the region’s sustainable transport network.  His remit oversees infrastructure and passenger service improvements across South Yorkshire to better connect people to places and to promote the use of public transport. Recently, this has included the introduction of Tram Train services, steering investment in the Supertram system, progressing Bus Partnerships across the four South Yorkshire Local Authorities and the refurbishment of Rotherham Interchange.  

Steve’s future focus is the important role supporting the delivery of the Mayor’s Transport Vision: improving connectivity within the region and beyond through a range of interventions across rail, light rail and bus; improving air quality through increased usage of public transport and reductions in emissions; promoting active travel through improvements in infrastructure; simplifying customer journeys through improvements in ticketing and information services.

Steve has a wealth of experience in both the public and private sector, having worked in a range of service areas including business improvement, customer experience and service operations. Prior to joining SYPTE, Steve had a successful career at Liberata UK Ltd, with responsibility for leading the development of Liberata's shared service operations for both customer service and back office functions, as well as the operational delivery for the CapacityGrid suite of services.

Steve also spent over 20 years at BT, working with a wide range of multinational clients from the oil, petrochemical and utilities markets. He has a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Kent and an MBA from Manchester Business School.
