King’s Speech shows commitment to transforming transport

Parliament

Today’s King’s Speech demonstrates a ‘continued commitment’ to transforming transport and supporting devolution over the next Parliament, building on the bold work undertaken since 2024, the Urban Transport Group has said.

The speech at the State Opening of Parliament, which sets out the Government’s legislative agenda for the new Parliamentary session, included:

  • Continuation of rail legislation (through the Railways and Passenger Benefits Bill)
  • Draft Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Bill

Last week, Jason Prince, Director of the Urban Transport Group, wrote to Prime Minister Kier Starmer to set out the transport priorities for the months ahead. These included those on rail, and taxis and private hire vehicles, which have been reflected in the King’s Speech.

Responding to today’s speech, Jason Prince said:

“The King’s Speech demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to transforming transport over the course of the next Parliament. Government has already made great strides on improving connectivity through new legislation, such as on buses and devolution, but there is more to be done to unlock the true potential that transport offers to both our local and national ambitions. The legislative programme outlined today is the next step towards achieving this, especially legislation to reform the taxi and private hire vehicle sector, and to continue rail reform through the Railways and Passenger Benefits Bill.

“Our member transport authorities look forward to continuing to work hand in hand with Government to deliver improved transport services for our local communities.”
