Transport Minister, Norman Baker MP has given his support to new guidance for health and safety in a bus or coach station. The information has been jointly published by the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT) and Passenger Transport Executive Group (pteg).

Speaking in the foreword to the document, Bus and Coach Station Design and Operation, the Minister said,

“Travelling by bus and coach is a safe form of passenger transport in the UK, but it is equally important that bus and coach stations are designed in a safe, modern and user friendly way. I am pleased to be able to support and commend this best practice guide to all those involved in the design, planning and operation of bus and coach stations of the future to enable them to deliver an attractive, safe and environmentally friendly facility which will encourage passengers to make more journeys by buses and coaches”.

David Brown, Lead Director General for pteg on bus issues said,

“This guidance identifies the key hazards and risk associated with the operation and design of bus stations, and provides practical advice on how they can be managed effectively.

“We see it being used by architects and designers as a reference document to provide insight into issues to be carefully considered as part of the design and development process.”

Adding further support, CPT President, Steve Whiteway said, "The whole of our industry takes the health and safety of our employees and passengers extremely seriously. We embrace anything that will enable us to improve on an already impressive record and I am confident Bus and Coach Station Design and Operation will assist us in this aim."
